Disiplin keilmuan manajemen rekayasa telah berkembang lama di dunia, tetapi belum cukup dikenal di Indonesia. Banyak praktisi industri, bahkan para akademisi, yang bertanya tentang disiplin keilmuan manajemen rekayasa. Manajemen rekayasa merupakan bidang keilmuan rekayasa (engineering) yang mengintegrasikan pengetahuan dan keterampilan rekayasa dan manajemen untuk pengelolaan proyek rekayasa dalam proses pembaharuan (renewal) guna peningkatan kinerja sistem secara substansial. Secara formal, perkembangan bidang keilmuan rekayasa di Indonesia dimulai dengan berdirinya Program Studi (Prodi) Sarjana Manajemen Rekayasa di ITB pada tahun 2010. Pendirian Prodi Manajemen Rekayasa ITB merupakan jawaban ITB terhadap tantangan yang dihadapi industri nasional berupa persaingan skala global dengan perubahan teknologi dan lingkungan bisnis yang sangat cepat. Kondisi tersebut menuntut perusahaan-perusahaan untuk mampu melakukan dan mengelola proses pembaharuan secara efektif dan efisien, seperti pengembangan produk, teknologi, sistem/sub sistem baru, guna menciptakan basis kekuatan baru bagi perusahaan untuk bertahan dan berkembang dalam jangka panjang. Makalah ini bertujuan untuk membahas mengenai bidang keilmuan manajemen rekayasa dan perannya untuk membangun keunggulan kompeittif industri nasional. Makalah ini juga membahas tentang Prodi Sarjana MR ITB terkait dengan latar belakang pendiriannya, visi dan misi, profil dan kompetensi lulusan, struktur kurikulum, serta lapangan pekerjaan bagi lulusannya. Makalah ini merupakan bentuk diseminasi bidang keilmuan manajemen rekayasa di Indonesia sehingga dapat diaplikasikan secara luas untuk membangun daya saing industri nasional khususnya dan mendorong pertumbuhan ekonomi Indonesia umumnya.
